Sammara Squirrelfish
Squirrelfish should be added to aquariums with plenty of rockwork, cracks, crevices and caves. Squirrelfish grow quite quickly so careful consideration should be made before adding to aquariums. Squirrelfish are nocturnal and prefer dimly lit aquariums. Some Squirrelfish are capable of making loud clicking sounds. Squirrelfish have large air bladders that are affected by loud sounds such as tapping on aquarium Glass. Although quite peaceful Squirrelfish are not considered reef safe as they will consume anything small enough to fit in their mouth. Squirrelfish are better kept in small groups as pairs may pick at each other. Provide a diet rich in meaty based foods multiple times daily. When first introduced to the aquarium Squirrelfish may not readily eat. Try providing live enriched adult Brine, Glass/Grass Shrimp or Black Worms. Avoid using nets as Squirrelfish have spines on their head and gills. They also have a large preopercular spine that can inflict a painful wound.
Sammara Squirrelfish are also sometimes known as the Blood Spot, Slender or Spotfin Squirrelfish. They are occasionally seen in the aquarium trade. Sammara Squirrelfish are a silvery pink color with a silver belly. Each scale has a red to black spot with a red stripe along their lateral line. Sammara Squirrelfish can grow up to 12 inches in length, but are typically smaller in captivity.
